EKU’s online bachelor’s degree in emergency medical care with a concentration in emergency services administration focuses on organizational leadership, as well as your management and operational knowledge. This concentration allows licensed paramedics to take administration-focused classes in budgeting, finance, personnel issues, adult education (for training officers), ethics, EMS law and EMS management. Graduates are prepared to take on leadership and supervisory roles.

Do I have to be Licensed?

Yes. All applicants to EKU’s online EMC program must be currently certified as a paramedic by the NREMT or a state EMS office.

Up to 12 hours from each of the online paramedic classes may be used for NREMT or state renewal in states that accept CAPCE accredited continuing education.

Curriculum

Focused on medical best practices and leadership building, EKU’s curriculum blends academic and professional preparation through a variety of topics such as EMS operations, advanced cardiology, management of behavioral emergencies and research methodology.

A total of 120 credits are required to graduate, including 42 upper-division credits.

Transfer Credits

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

EMC 400 – Emergency Care Systems Management (3)
EMS systems design and typical agency divisions, including operations, communications, training, and customer service. Projects focus on system design, training and efficiency.

EMC 420 – Emergency Services Design and Budget (3)
Identify and compare issues with staffing, operations, communications, training and mission with various EMS systems models. Develop and revise sample budgets for EMS systems.

EMC 430 – Legal and Ethical Aspects of Emergency Services (3)
Examine and apply moral and ethical decisions made in emergency services. Issues of diversity, expanded health care settings, aging population, and others will be explored.

EMC 440 – EMS Instruction (3)
Introduction to the principles involved in EMS adult learning. Roles issues, domains of learning, and instruction models will be emphasized. Organization and planning for the EMS community including diverse learning populations and regulations.
